Damico, Julie
Science Teacher, v81 n2 p50-55 Feb 2014
This article describes the Exploring Experimental Design lesson, which uses a Pictionary-style approach to introduce the elements of the third science and engineering practice: Planning and Carrying Out Investigations, found in "A Framework for K-12 Science Education" (NRC 2012) and the "Next Generation Science Standards" ("NGSS") (NGSS Lead States 2013). After completing the lessons, students will better understand the components of experimental design and will be better prepared to apply their knowledge and skills during inquiry based investigations of a variety of disciplinary core ideas. The lesson also allows students to develop concepts about planning and carrying out a scientific investigation in a risk-free and personally interesting context.
