This article addresses the pros and cons of incorporating more non-canonical political theory into our introductory political theory courses. I begin by identifying what I take to be the goals of an introductory political theory class. Based on these four goals, I examine the reasons why we tend not to include non-canonical works in our introductory courses. Next, I move on to a discussion of the advantages of incorporating more non-canonical theory. I argue that the advantages of adding more non-canonical theory to our introductory courses outweigh the disadvantages, and propose that we make conscious efforts to get outside the canon. Finally, I present suggested course syllabi based on my own introductory courses, in the hope that these critiques might help us develop courses that are better at meeting the goals I laid out at the beginning of the article.
