The International Studies Minor in Practice: Program Offerings and Student Choices
Breuning, Marijke; Quinn, John James
Journal of Political Science Education, v7 n2 p173-195 2011
International studies programs are increasingly popular at colleges and universities across the United States, and most prior research and efforts have been has focused on the international studies major. However, institutions may often find it much easier to create a minor rather than a major program given scarce resources and a preexisting curriculum. This study focuses on the international studies minor. We complement a survey of the basic parameters of such minor programs in the United States with a case study that investigates how students implement the minor with their course selections at Truman State University, a public liberal arts university in the Midwest, which offers a fairly typical international studies minor. We end with suggestions for the improvement of such minors that can be implemented with existing course offerings. (Contains 10 tables and 8 notes.)
