Vest, Floyd – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Develops a division algorithm in terms of familiar manipulations of concrete objects and presents it with a series of questions for diagnosis of students' understanding of the algorithm in terms of the concrete model utilized. Also offers general guidelines for using concrete illustrations to explain algorithms and other mathematical principles.…

Lawrenz, Frances; Dantchik, Arthur – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Investigated developmental and/or sex components of energy attitudes using Kuhn's Energy Opinionnaire. Results indicate that changes in student attitudes through grade levels are consistent with cognitive and affective development literature and that sex differences are more pronounced in older students (with females having a more external world…

Gressard, Clarice; Loly, Brenda H. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Investigated the effects of age and participation in a computer-related staff development program on elementary, junior high, and high school teachers' (N-4l) computer attitudes. Results indicate that anxiety about computers was significantly decreased while confidence/liking were increased and that age was not a significant factor. (DH)

Bell, Elizabeth S.; Bell, Ronald N. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
termined that students who completed writing assignments on mathematics problems were better problem solvers than students in control groups, supporting the contention that expository writing is an effective, practical, and innovative tool for problem solving. (Sample problems and writing assignments are included.) (DH)

Koballa, Thomas R., Jr.; Crawley, Frank E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Discusses: (1) the nature of an attitude toward science; (2) why people have attitudes toward science; and (3) how attitudes toward science can be improved. Also differentiates attitudes from beliefs and behaviors. (DH)

Hill, Douglas M.; Redden, Michael G. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Control group students (receiving descriptive, non-inquiry science) and experimental group students (using Science Curriculum Improvement Study-SCIS "Interaction and Systems" materials) were later combined in grade 4 for instruction with SCIS "Subsystems and Variables" materials. Results show similar difficulties in learning system concepts…

Galfo, Armand J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Discusses a strategy for teaching degrees of freedom (in conjunction with sampling theory). The strategy, used successfully with students who have completed no more than beginning secondary school algebra, involves drawing items from a pool of five in a hat while explaining sample means and variances. (DH)

Bybee, Rodger W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
An analysis is given of the crisis and loss of confidence in science and technology education, due in part to maintenance of outdated purposes, programs, and practices. The need to clarify and reformulate goals and purposes and thus restore confidence is discussed. (MNS)
