Ost, David H. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Discusses the nature of technological literacy, considering its relationship to science education, mathematics education, and computer science education. Indicates that technological literacy is a skill and an attitude which is basic to contemporary society. Problems related to cognitive development are noted. (JN)

Ball, Stanley – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
The learning potential of Logo programing language is discussed. Observations of students in kindergarten and first grade interacting with a sequence of Logo activities led to the development of nine benchmarks. (MNS)

McNairy, Marion R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Science education is viewed from a framework that integrated sources of knowledge with the traditional processes of scientific inquiry. Sciencing is then described, and how it could be implemented with young children is discussed. (MNS)

Pratt, Donald L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Recent thinking about the mathematics being used in science courses, with an emphasis on problem solving, is reviewed. Data from a survey of the mathematics content in secondary science textbooks are then presented, with suggestions for science instruction. (MNS)

Hittner, Amy; Jacobs, Judith – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
High school counselors in Virginia were surveyed on their recommendations for academic programs in science and mathematics for fictitiously named male and female students at different levels of academic achievement. The counselors were apparently not influenced by the sex of students. (MNS)

Lindbeck, Joy S.; Dambrot, Faye – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
Secondary teachers in a workshop on overcoming computer and math anxiety and students in a programming course were given measures of anxiety and achievement. Low mathematical ability and coursework were related to math and computer anxiety and negative attitudes. Attitudes improved for the teachers but not the students. (MNS)

Okebukola, Peter Akinsola – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
The effects of cooperative learning on attitudes of students toward laboratory work were studied with ninth-grade biology students in Nigeria. It was found to be successful in developing favorable attitudes. Reasons for this are discussed. (MNS)

McGinty, Robert L.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
Textbook analyses for 1924, 1944, and 1984, suggest that the mathematics program regressed in expectations for students. The number of word problems in fifth-grade books has decreased and the amount of drill problems increased. (MNS)

Blosser, Patricia E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
Studies on science course improvement projects are synthesized, with reactions from several professional organizations. Other reports from the mid-1980s are noted. A brief summary of research findings is provided, with a longer discussion on the impetus for change, the conditions needed for change, and who decides. (MNS)

Ost, David H. – School Science and Mathematics, 1987
Discusses the importance of the use of models in modern science. Suggests that models can make a significant contribution to the teaching of science and mathematics. Explains that representative models, analogue models, logical models, and theoretical models are most commonly used models in science and mathematics. (TW)

Jansson, Lars C.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1987
Discusses the claims that experiences in computer programming enhance performance on conditional reasoning tasks. Describes three experimental studies designed to address that hypothesis using three different populations of students. Results of all three studies indicate nonsignificant treatment effects. (TW)

Parish, Charles R.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1987
Promotes the use of computers in teaching not only to solve problems but also to help students be better at analyzing problems and developing procedures for their solution. Outlines several problems where a computer-assisted analysis can help give students a thorough understanding of the topic. (TW)

Ayers, Jerry B. – School Science and Mathematics, 1987
Reports on a study designed to analyze six primary science education journals published in 1985 and compares the results with some baseline data collected in 1970. Results indicated that the amount of material being published per year during that period increased, with additional emphasis on methods of teaching. (TW)
