Leechford, Sandra; Rice, Dale R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The sample was a randomly selected sixth-grade class in a medium-sized southern city, and consisted of 33 students. The study was designed to answer four questions pertaining to the effect of calculators. Results indicated a calculator-based curriculum has a positive effect on student problem solving. (MP)

Holtan, Boyd – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
It is felt that Aptitude-Treatment-Interaction (ATI) research is just scratching the surface as yet and does not have sufficient information to support a general theory. The current state of ATI research is documented, and seven conclusions made during a similar examination in 1975 are reviewed. (MP)

Baust, Joseph A., Sr. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
Language arts (oral and written communication), physical education (communication with motor skills), and mathematics (communication with words and symbols), are seen to present the most natural environment for instruction on spatial relations. Activities are suggested which can combine these areas and provide pupils with an enjoyable learning…

Cromie, Robert G. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
Activities are proposed which are designed to aid the development of formal reasoning processes in middle and junior high school pupils. It is felt the materials presented can be easily adapted by an instructor to many audience levels. The puzzle format is designed to increase student motivation for participation. (MP)

Spooner, William E.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The effects of a five-day science workshop on the attitudes of elementary school teachers towards science and teaching science were assessed. The study adds evidence to a growing body of knowledge supporting the notion that attitudes can be changed over short periods of time. (MP)

Smart, James R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The focus is on suggestions, with examples, for teaching estimation skills. Estimating can be a very enjoyable as well as a very useful part of mathematics, helping to improve attitudes of pupils toward the subject by providing success. Estimation is shown not to be synonymous with mental arithmetic. (MP)

Shepherd, Debbie L.; Renner, John W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
This examination used tenth- and twelfth-grade pupils from three high schools in Oklahoma. Data from the study suggested that the concepts which schools think they are teaching are not being learned. It is suggested the hypothesis be tested on a much wider sample of science content. (MP)

Kulm, Gerald – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
As calculators and computer use increases in mathematics education, more educators are recognizing a shift in emphasis from computation to problem solving. Ways to generate problems that can be used to develop pupil creativity and insight are suggested, and process-oriented instruction is promoted. (MP)

Bybee, Rodger; Yager, Robert E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
Results of six original studies are extracted for comparison in three ways. These are summaries of: (1) reported problems of various groups of science educators; (2) solutions proposed by these same groups to the problems facing science education; and (3) recommendations for future directions. A synthesis of the recommendations focuses on four…

Silver, Edward A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The harmonic mean is defined, and examples of problems viewed suitable for classroom exploration are presented. Such exercises provide many opportunities for students to engage in interesting nontrivial problem-solving activities and practice on many algebraic skills. Class discussion of the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means is suggested.…

Coble, Charles R.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
Details are provided of a recent project in North Carolina funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The information includes data from a survey that looked at the statewide status of handicapped science education. Four recommendations are made, based upon observations of the project and the survey results. (MP)

Aichele, Douglas B. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
Three examples are presented which involve constructions employing a compass, a centimeter ruler, and a calculator. Employing mathematical tools to support understanding and discovery of mathematical principles is viewed as being clearly a desire of mathematics educators, but it is felt such tools are not frequently used to their fullest. Juraschek, William – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
This discussion is primarily designed to increase teachers' awareness of Piaget's theory of cognitive development and implications for mathematics in the middle school. It is hoped such awareness will compel instructors to adopt strategies that help pupils gain more from mathematical experiences, by providing impetus for innovation and…

Schibeci, Renato A.; Sorensen, Irene – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
The study looked at the potential of the Draw-a-Scientist Test (DAST) as a quick, reliable method of assessing elementary school children's images of scientists. Two schools were chosen from very different environments in Western Australia. Results indicated that the DAST is potentially useful to assess global images. (MP)

Shaughnessy, Joan; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
The investigation was intended to assess the relationships of three variables at three distinctly different grade levels. The objective was to understand better the roles that each construct plays in relation to mathematics attitudes. Results did not establish causality, but it is felt implications for causality are clear. (MP)
