Olson, Judith; Olson, Melfried – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
A series of situations is suggested incorporating hands-on activities involving concrete experiences with measurement. It is felt that the activities used to teach mathematics and science at the Middle School level need to be specifically suited for the young adolescent. Extensions are possible for in-depth investigations for more advanced…

Clark-Meeks, Loretta F.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The primary goal was to see if differences in mathematics attitudes existed among prospective teachers in preschool, early childhood, intermediate, and special education programs. No significant difference was found. For the most part, prospective teachers appeared to have unfavorable attitudes towards mathematics. The 64 subjects involved were…

Byrd, J. William; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
Clusters of behaviors associated with teachers judged to be successful were explored. It is hoped the information will be useful in providing clues to identify preservice students who are apt to make successful teachers. No conclusive, broadly based, significant characteristic differences between successful and unsuccessful teachers were found.…

Hofstein, Avi; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The Learning Environmental Inventory is promoted as a tool that has been used extensively to ascertain differences in class environment and how student environment perceptions relate to achievement and attitude. It's felt that teachers can improve their classrooms through careful use of the instrument and application of knowledge gained. (MP)

Pratscher, Sandra K.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
It is felt a clearly defined and carefully planned curriculum must be used to avoid wasting the talents of the gifted youngster. Four curriculum models are presented. These are the: (1) Acceleration Model; (2) Breadth/Depth Model; (3) Topics Model, and (4) Enrichment Model. Examples of applications of each are noted. (MP)

Gore, Joseph A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The goal is to make some suggestions that may be useful to teachers in meeting the mathematics needs of the noncollege-bound student. It is felt teachers can motivate pupils with problems that are relevant and practical. Further, teachers need to approach mathematics from a realistic point of view. (MP)

Vance, Irvin E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
A complete characterization of minimum conditions for congruence of quadrilaterals is presented. Convex quadrilaterals are treated first, then concave quadrilaterals are considered. A study of such minimum conditions is seen to provide some interesting and important activities for students. Only background in triangle congruence is necessary. (MP)

Szetela, Walter; Dindorf, Antoni – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
This report is based upon three weeks of intensive observations of Polish classrooms from primary to university mathematics. A high level of mathematics content compared to North American schools, a high level of teacher dominance, and the use of specialists in grades 5-12 were among the points noted. (MP)

Glass, Lynn W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
Reasons business and industry participate in educational support are grouped into civic duty, career education, and communication. Support is grouped into five broad categories: employment, equipment and materials, facilities, financial, and personnel. Such sources can help replace the reduced level of funding by government. Wearne-Hiebert, Diana C.; Hiebert, James – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
This study looked at student difficulties with fractions by focusing on understanding of part/whole relationships. The sample consisted of two sixth-grade and two eighth-grade classes. A lack of substantial improvement from sixth to eighth grade on many fraction tasks was noted and viewed as cause for concern. (MP)

Threadgill-Sowder, Judith – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
The hypothesis examined suggests that prequestions should be more facilitating than postquestions in directing students to the information necessary for a problem's solution. Fourteen problems were designed for a criterion measure, and 52 students in community college intermediate algebra classes were the subjects. Results indicated question…

Wollman, Warren – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
The pendulum and balance beam were studied. The principal question addressed was whether students could substantially and quickly benefit from a teaching strategy explicitly designed to promote transfer. About half the subjects could acquire in brief time a procedure for transferring knowledge to novel tasks. (MP)

Mitchell, Charles E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
It is noted that defining subtraction independently of addition through use of physical objects can help one to illustrate the non-commutativity of this operation. Lack of awareness of the importance of the order of the digits may be a primary cause of errors in compound subtraction. (MP)

McNerney, Charles R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
This article considers the sum of a finite geometric series as applied to numeric data storage in the memory of an electronic digital computer. The presentation is viewed as relevant to programing in several languages and removes some of the mystique associated with syntax constraints that any language imposes. (MP)
