Davis, Shelley J., Ed.; Knaupp, Jonathan, Ed. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Reviews two science computer software packages (on time and seasons and on maps) and three mathematics packages (on solving equations and inequalities, an algebraic coordinate game, and statistics). In addition to descriptions of the contents of each, comments indicate weaknesses and strengths. (MNS)

Baum, Joan – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Using Edwin Abbott's book, "Flatland," is suggested for mathematics and English classes to help students lose their fear of mathematics. Background information and comments on the book are given. (MNS)

Retzer, Kenneth A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Suggests specific topics in inferential logic which might be incorporated into the geometry course and illustrates how the use of inference schemes may help justify the effectiveness of proof techniques. (MNS)

Agris, Myrna Skobel; Austin, Joe Dan – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Early issues of "School Science and Mathematics" were used to investigate the writings of women educators and their role in education. Identified articles by women authors and discussed how the integration of science and mathematics, psychology and other issues, and references to women were treated. (MNS)

Mitchell, Charles E.; Burton, Grace M. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
The importance of spatial ability in facilitating curricular goals in science and mathematics is stressed. Suggestions are given about materials and activities to use and an instrument for assessing visual perception is illustrated. (MNS)

Yager, Robert E.; Bonnstetter, Ronald J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Results from a 1982 follow-up study of student perceptions of science instruction are presented and compared with data from the 1977 national assessment. Data were obtained from 700 students in Iowa aged 9, 13, 17, and young adult. (MNS)

Johns, Kenneth W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Nevada elementary school teachers were surveyed to determine obstacles to science teaching. Results obtained from 292 questionnaires revealed a fairly uniform perception of obstacles (such as lack of teaching time, equipment, supplies) across categories of grade, sex, and age. Results agree with those obtained in several national surveys. (JN)

Retzer, Kenneth A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
A previous article argued that the tradition of teaching sentential logic in geometry should be challenged and suggested that sentential logic be moved to algebra and replaced by inferential logic. Specific inferential logic topics were also suggested. This article elaborates on the inference schemes suggested and describes general proof…

Barrow, Lloyd H.; Bitner, Betty L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Examined biology textbooks to determine their cancer education content. Because the analysis of six commonly utilized textbooks showed that none addressed all categories related to scientific, clinical, and psycho-social aspects of cancer, it is recommended that textbooks be supplemented with other sources providing information on cancer. (JN)

Pereira-Mendoza, L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Describes an intuitive and discovery-oriented approach that can be used to develop formulas for rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. The approach emphasizes the interrelationships between the formulas. (JN)

Harty, Harold; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Significant positive Pearson correlation coefficients were found for students'(N=91) interest in and attitudes toward science (0.58), interest in science and curiosity (0.47), and attitudes toward science and curiosity (0.40). Implications for science instruction and curriculum development are addressed. (JN)

Thomas, William E.; Grouws, Douglas A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Describes a computer program (for Apple II microcomputers) which simulates motion in a quadratic resisting medium. Descriptive equations, program inputs and outputs, and program evaluation are considered. Program listing and/or program on initialized disk may be obtained by contacting the author. (JN)

Fredrick, Dennis; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Compared test results for new adult freshmen (N=73) with those of younger freshmen under age 25 (N=738). Among results reported are those indicating that neither group is "mathematically literate" and that, although adults may be at an initial disadvantage, the gap between their skills and their counterparts does not appear insurmountable.
