Self-Directed Learning and Schooling: Identifying Pertinent Theories and Illustrative Research.
Skager, Rodney
International Review of Education, v25 n4 p517-43 1979
Six theoretical positions on human learning are identified as relevant to the development of self-direction: modeling; reinforcement; curiosity motivation; competency motivation; attribution theory and personal causation; and humanism. Four approaches to educational practice associated with self-direction are identified: experimental learning; discovery learning; the open classroom; and structured individualization. (Author/SJL)
