Unmasking the Brilliant Disguise: Smallness, Authority and the Irony of a Teacher's Body
Ingalls, Rebecca
Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies, v28 n3-4 p239-252 Dec 2006
Emerging from the entanglement of tensions with the perception that if one is a minority, female, and short, it would appear that one is likely never to get to the top of the corporate ladder. In addition to what people already know about the stark realities of gender and racial discrimination in the workplace, some studies suggest that physical size and its connection to authority in the workplace is yet another pressing concern. In this article, the author reflects her own experience on the issue of height as it relates to workplace success. With respect to academic issues like classroom dynamics, departmental politics, and the tenure track, this issue of height as it relates to workplace success seems important to address, in addition to the myriad other factors influencing institutional bias. Nevertheless, knowing that there are aspects of their physical selves that indeed will never change, and that will continue to influence teachers and others' evaluations of them and of their academic merit. The author believes that prejudices against teacher bodies--whether they are directed toward the race, gender, sexuality, ability, or sizes of those bodies--must become part of the ether of discussion around subjectivity in the workplace.
