De la maternelle a la premiere annee: Evolution des habilites metalinguistiques et comprehension de l'ecrit. [From the Preschool to the First Year of School: Evolution of Metalinguistic Skills and Comprehension of Text].
Melancon, Julie; Ziarko, Helene
Canadian Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education, v8 n1 p37-58 Oct 1999
Examined the evolution of metalinguistic skills (phonological and syntactical awareness) of 46 French-speaking children from kindergarten to the end of first grade and the relationship between those abilities and text comprehension. Found that metalinguistic skills progressed significantly, and syntactical awareness (word counting ability and correction of nongrammatical sentence ability) in kindergarten predicted comprehension at the end of first grade.
