Reviews the empirical literature on the question of whether teaching and research are mutually supportive concluding that it provides an ambiguous answer with recent studies suggesting negative relationships. Reports another study which suggests that teaching and research tend to be mutually supportive, especially at schools where research is not emphasized. (JT)
