Where There Are No Therapists: The Related Services Assistant Alternative.
Robinson, Nancy B.; Tada, Wendy L.; Lee, Mellanie; Atkinson, Alan; Rekemesik, Natalia
Journal of Research in Rural Education, v14 n2 p107-15 Fall 1998
A culturally appropriate program with a functional approach was developed to train related services assistants (RSAs) in U.S. Pacific jurisdictions. RSAs support students with severe disabilities to achieve individualized-education-program objectives. Evaluation revealed positive impacts for disabled students served by 19 trainees, but newly trained RSAs were underutilized by schools. Implications for similar rural U.S. programs are discussed.
