Building Bridges to Student Engagement: Communicating Respect and Care for Students in Urban High Schools.
Cothran, Donetta J.; Ennis, Catherine D.
Journal of Research and Development in Education, v33 n2 p106-17 Win 2000
Investigated urban high school teachers' and students' perspectives on student engagement. Data from observations and interviews indicated that teachers focused on barriers they perceived restrained their ability to engage students. Students reported barriers but noted that their engagement levels were flexible and responsive to teachers' actions. Students believed that engaging teachers communicated, cared, and enthusiastically presented active learning opportunities. (SM)
