A Case Study of the Changing Role of the Academic Middle Manager in Higher Education: Between Hierarchical Control and Collegiality?
Hellawell, David; Hancock, Nick
Research Papers in Education: Policy & Practice, v16 n2 p183-97 Jun 2001
Interviewed British higher education middle managers about their roles, specifically the extent to which collegiality was a significant factor in the university's internal decision making. Respondents noted difficulties with and imperfections in collegiality but considered it the most appropriate form of decision making because it was important to win the hearts and minds of staff in favor of necessary changes.
