What Does a School Mean to a Community? Assessing the Social and Economic Benefits of Schools to Rural Villages in New York.
Lyson, Thomas A.
Journal of Research in Rural Education, v17 n3 p131-37 Win 2002
A study identified community characteristics associated with the presence of a school. Data from the U.S. census and the state department of education for 297 rural New York villages indicated that social and economic welfare is higher in communities with schools. Schools are especially critical to the well-being of the smallest villages. (Contains 26 references.) (TD)
