The Educational Effects of Rural Adolescents' Social Networks
Singh, Kusum; Dika, Sandra
Journal of Research in Rural Education, v18 n2 114-128 Fall 2003
This study explored the social networks and sources of social support for rural high-school adolescents and how these are related to educational and psychological outcomes. We examined quality, frequency. and nature of social relationships of high school students to understand how size, density, heterogeneity, compositional quality of social network, and frequency of interaction affected educational aspiration and academic engagement of rural youth. Results showed that academic support and emotional support provided by network members explained a significant, though moderate, amount of variance in educational outcomes. (Contains 6 tables.)
