Becoming-in-the-World-with-Others: Inter-Act Theatre Workshop
Hellier-Tinoco, Ruth
Research in Drama Education, v10 n2 p159-173 Jun 2005
This article explores the concepts of Freire's "universal human ethic", Price and Shildrick's "becoming-in-the-world-with-others" and Foucault's "power in action". Although human relationships and behaviour may be regarded as intrinsic to most arts projects, the specific context of the Inter-Act project places the focus upon the very nature of relationships and behaviour, by bringing together two "groups" of adults: one, marginalised and labelled as "learning disabled", the other, university students in a transitory and formative stage of life. I suggest that through encounters and relationships in the integrated workshop and performance environment of Inter-Act, people are able to develop their own sense of individual identity, thus becoming-in-the-world-with-others.
