The article examines the experience of participating in Contact Improvisation by male prisoners. It specifically focuses on issues of touch for this participant group and how inmates can learn different ways of acting from acquiring Contact skills, contributing to their rehabilitation. The paper looks at the culture in prisons that propagates a touch "taboo", which sets the context for investigating its subversion in Contact Improvisation. Linking the context of the prison to discussion of the nature of touch in Contact Improvisation, the article weaves primary data obtained from a dance project in an adult male prison with other sociological data on touch in prisons and on Contact Improvisation. It concludes arguing for the social value of touch in dance. (Contains 3 notes.)
