Relationship of Personality Traits to Student Retention
Liang, John Paul
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Carl Jung's theory of psychological types has been the basis for the development of personality categorization, including tests such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This study analyzed the extent of the relationship between MBTI and Tinto (1993) retention factors that influence Oriental medicine students' choice of staying or dropping out of school, and found the most common personality types, traits, and retention issues of participants at an acupuncture college. The most significant findings include "Intuitive" as the most common personality trait among the study's participants, and "Debt, Medical, Counseling, Personal, Family Events" as the most common retention issue, regardless of personality type.
