An At-Risk Charter School: Setting High Expectations
Thomas, Michelle Prear
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The purpose of the qualitative exploratory case study was to examine an at-risk urban charter school in Ohio that has met AYP as described by the federal law and that continuously improved and maintained progress over a 5-year period from 2001 to 2006. The research study included an investigation of the lived experiences of the teachers and parents of students at an at-risk urban charter school in Ohio The data collection process consisted of one-on-one interviews with 10 teachers and 10 parents at the urban charter school. On average, both the teachers and parents had been a part of the school for about 5 years. Of the 10 teachers, 8 were females and 2 were males. Eighty percent of the teachers were certified. Of the 10 parents interviewed, 9 were female and 1 was male. After confirming that the data collected were accurate, the transcripts were entered into NVivo 7, a qualitative software program. Coding of the data resulted in approximately 130 common themes for the teachers, and approximately 140 common themes for the parents. The common themes for both parents and teachers were reduced to four combined common themes. Those themes were (a) promoting academic success, (b) raising standards in the school, (c) engaging parents in the school, and (d) making changes. The findings in this study suggested that there was a connection between teachers, parents, and students at this charter school that effectively aided in the students' academic achievement.
