The Efficacy of Human Figure Drawings as Measures of Emotional Disturbance among African-American Males
Doby-Copeland, Cheryl
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Howard University
The present study examined the predictive validity of the Draw-A-Person: Screening Procedure for Emotional Disturbance (DAP: SPED) (Naglieri, McNeish & Bardos, 1991) relative to the Scale for Assessing Emotional Disturbance-Second Edition (SAED-2) (Epstein & Cullinan, 2010). The pool of participants consisted of matched samples (N = 27; 6-12 years old) of African American males in regular education classes and special education services for emotional disturbance. Students completed drawings of a man, a woman, and self, which were scored using the DAP: SPED. The SAED-2 Rating Scale was completed by teachers. Study results confirmed the DAP: SPED to be a significant predictor of internalizing behavior disturbance, with its effectiveness increased when used in combination with the SAED-2.
