Insider Activism: Faculty as Institutional Change Agents
Guckenheimer, Debra
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of California, Santa Barbara
Social movements not only target organizations from outside locations; activism also takes place from insider locations. Insider activism often only goes unrecognized and unrewarded, and activists must also overcome institutional constraints. In this dissertation, I that faculty efforts at institutional diversity deserve attention from the social movement literature as a case of insider activism and that activism inside organizations is an important, but all too often overlooked subject for social movement scholars. I utilize interviews with faculty working to increase institutional diversity on their campus and an online survey of faculty across the country to explore faculty diversity work. I argue that radical habitus as mediated by fields drive social movement participation such as faculty diversity work.
