Thirty Years of Racial/Ethnic Identity Development Research: An Examination of Black College Students Racial/Ethnic Identity Development and Acculturation and How It Affects Their Attitudes toward Professional Help-Seeking

After thirty years of racial/ethnic identity development (R/EID) studies, research has shown little other than how racial identity is a reflection of one's political affiliation with a racial group. Recent research has shown that R/EID of college students affects psychological well-being (Kwan & Sodowsky, 1997; Yoo & Lee, 2005). However, Black students in particular do not take advantage of professional psychological services. (Cokely, 2007; Sanchez & King-Toler, 2007). Acculturation may be a more effective measure of the psychological process of cultural affiliation. This study examined the relationship between racial/ethnic identity and acculturation to Black students' attitudes toward professional help-seeking. Results indicate that acculturation, personal problems, and having a positive experience in counseling were significant predictors of attitudes toward professional help-seeking. Directions for future research and ways in which counseling centers can better serve their Black clients are suggested.
