The Efficacy of Child-Centered Play Therapy with Hispanic Spanish-Speaking Children when Conducted by a Monolingual English-Speaking Counselor

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy as an intervention when the client and the counselor do not speak the same language. The participants of the study were 34 Spanish-speaking children of Hispanic descent ranging in age from 4 to 8 who were referred to counseling for exhibiting externalizing behavior problems, internalizing behavior problems, and adjustment difficulties. The participants were randomly assigned to a treatment group which received 30-minutes of child-centered play therapy once a week for 8 weeks or a wait-list control group which received 8 weeks of child-centered play therapy after the treatment group concluded. Split plot analysis of variance was used to analyze the results. The teachers reported a statistically significant reduction in overall problematic behavior and externalizing behaviors across time.
