Technology: Technology and Common Sense
Van Horn, Royal
Phi Delta Kappan, v85 n7 p487 Mar 2004
The absence of common sense in the world of technology continues to amaze the author. Things that seem so logical to just aren nott for many people. The installation of Voice-over IP (VoIP, with IP standing for Internet Protocol) in many school districts is a good example. Schools have always had trouble with telephones. Many districts don't even have an accurate inventory of how many telephone lines they have coming into their schools. The author visited a high school recently where both the band parents and the athletic club had purchased phone lines that the district office did not know about. The author also finds it interesting that almost no one knows that they can pick up the handset on a fax machine and use it as a telephone. So, given all this trouble, many districts are embracing VoIP. Just run the phone system over the district's wide area network (WAN), and save on the phone bill. It is a plan -- but not a very good one. The author expresses his views on VoIP in this article. He states the problem issues that he has with VoIP.
