I Want to Go Back to Jail
Olcott, Lynn
Phi Delta Kappan, v86 n4 p310 Dec 2004
In this article, the author reflects on her teaching experience at the Onondaga County Justice Center, a maximum-security facility where she taught in the women's pod. She says that every day she encountered students who were eager to learn and glad for the simple materials she brought. She rediscovered pure, joyous teaching. In that stark environment, she rediscovered the educational power of kindness and respect. This personal account gives details about why she felt teaching in the jail was such a good experience. She claims, "Each day in the jail, I was true to my calling. In jail I was a teacher."
