Phi Delta Kappan, v86 n9 p654 May 2005
Walter Parker's January article, "Teaching Against Idiocy," raises important and fascinating issues relating to the proper role and function of the K-12 social studies classroom. Although J. Martin Rochester, the author of this article, agrees with his basic premise that schools obviously have an obligation to help promote citizenship education, he thinks Parker fails to address several concerns. Mr. Rochester discusses those concerns in this article. He is not arguing that schools should be amoral, dull, drill-and-kill, Darwinian, or removed from citizenship training--only that people need to be very careful before they pursue the "national campaign" Parker proposes.
