Learning to Read in Order to Learn: Building a Program for Upper-Elementary Students
Liben, David; Liben, Meredith
Phi Delta Kappan, v86 n5 p401 Jan 2005
After instituting a successful K-2 reading program at the Family Academy in Harlem, the authors of this article faced a new challenge. They set out to learn everything they could about reading comprehension, which they realized was the key to expanding their older students' knowledge of the world. They developed a K-2 reading program. It was grounded in current research and had been field-tested; the program greatly enhanced their children's reading abilities, especially decoding and fluency. This K-2 program is discussed at length in this article.
