Tips for Readers of Research--No Causation from Correlation.
Bracey, Gerald W.
Phi Delta Kappan, v79 n9 p711-12 May 1998
Given only correlation coefficient, one cannot infer causality. This lesson has been lost on Secretary of Education Richard Riley, who recently intoned that "taking rigorous mathematics courses ... early in secondary schools is a gateway to college and future employment." Students taking such classes have probably already been identified as college material. Also, Milwaukee's algebra-for-all program may turn off more ninth graders than it encourages. (MLH)
