Tested experience with diversity as the key to teaching tolerance by studying 2,184 eighth grade social-studies students attending 7 public and 24 private schools in New York City and Fort Worth, Texas. Private schools currently perform slightly better at encouraging interethnic friendships and developing support for democratic norms. (Contains 23 references.) (MLH)
