This publication provides a compilation of statistical information covering enrollments in Pennsylvania public, private and nonpublic schools. Public schools totaled 3,248 which included: 19 comprehensive area vocational-technical schools (AVTSs), 66 occupational AVTSs, 116 charter schools, two consortium-operated alternative high schools, 9 juvenile correctional institutions, two state-owned schools and 3,034 schools in school districts. There were 2,404 private and nonpublic schools. This publication contains a variety of information including total enrollments by grade and county, the religious affiliation of private and nonpublic schools and the number of elementary and secondary schools. In 2005-06, pre-Kindergarten (PreK) enrollments for the public schools were collected for the second time. A total of 8,790 PreK students were reported. The source of this data is an annual survey of all Pennsylvania public, private and nonpublic schools. National data was drawn from the results of surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
