The problem of corrupting the integrity of athletics and athletic programs is spreading because of the degree of competitive activities of the major sports. Leaders and rule makers have attempted to establish rules and regulations that clearly define the boundaries of the NCAA, and establish controls that are functional. (MLW)

Some campuses have too many students to advise on an individual basis, and faculty realize that it is impossible to do an adequate job. In such situations, advising models must be developed that allow faculty to advise students via a process different than the one-on-one model. (MLW)

Issues in tort and contract law and recent experiences in litigation that influence the academic adviser's responsibility are outlined, including negligence, nondisclosure and misrepresentation, defamation, written and oral contracts, and the adviser as an agent of the institution.
