Because of previous barriers within the educational system, scant research has been done to evaluate the effectiveness of existing advising systems. A project of the National Academic Advising Association to establish research priorities for the organization is reported. (MLW)

The inability of some students to continue pursuing the undergraduate academic program they initially selected because of stringent institutional or departmental requirements is discussed. A survey to study the problem of the need for alternative advising for these students is described. (MLW)

The scope of existing services for adult learners in higher education was examined in a mail survey of academic advisors. Two analyses were performed to review the effect of institutional type on services provided, and to understand the impact of perceived administrative support on efforts to serve this student population. The Family and Child Development Advising Center at Kansas State University, created to centralize all advising functions into one operation, seeks also to explore the more personal aspects of the student's academic program and vocational decisions. A questionnaire survey of student perceptions of the centralized advising center is discussed. (MLW)
