Using CensusAtSchool Data to Motivate Students
Wong, Ian
Australian Mathematics Teacher, v62 n1 p38-40 2006
Imagine being able to engage students in learning statistics. Teachers would need their students to have access to a large database of real data, preferably about students. It would be even better if students were part of the database. Ideally, the data would enable students to ask questions of interest to them. For a teacher, it would be desirable to have a project that meets the requirements of today's curriculum and modern teaching practice. Just for good measure, the project should be able to use technology in a meaningful way. "CensusAtSchool" enables teachers and students to take samples of raw Australia-wide data from a large database that contains the answers to questions that the students have provided, and can be used to investigate questions of interest.
