Building the Bridge between Home and School: One Rural School's Steps to Interrogate and Celebrate Multiple Literacies
Hansen, Faith Beyer
Community Literacy Journal, v4 n2 p33-45 2009
This paper examines one rural school's efforts to recognize and celebrate the multiple literacies of its students, by hosting a LINK Up family night that highlights the varied funds of knowledge of school, community and home. In dialogue with excerpts from Sherman Alexie's novel, "The Absolute True Diaries of a Part Time Indian," the paper discusses the importance of the home-school connection in building students' literacies and details one school's particular process in creating a night to bridge the gap that too often divides parents, students and teachers.
