Focuses on a region of the northwestern United States that is experiencing tremendous change as traditional occupations give way to commercial and residential development. Examines, not literacy requirements in particular workplaces or industries, but "literate action" in the context of such change, action necessitated by the economic, social, and political pressures increasingly familiar to people everywhere.
