An Academic Standoff: Literacy Task Preferences of African American and Mexican American Male Adolescents versus Teacher-Expected Preferences.
Orange, Carolyn; Horowitz, Rosalind
Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, v43 n1 p28-39 Sep 1999
Finds significant differences in the preferences for literacy tasks of African-American and Mexican-American male adolescent high school students and what their teachers perceived to be students' preferences. Finds considerable resistance from teachers to accepting results regarding students' preferences. Concludes that teacher misconceptions are a contributor to student boredom, disengagement, and minority student achievement differentials. (SR)
