The Role Of Women In Popular Education In Bolivia: A Case Study Of The "Oficina Juridica Para La Mujer"
Kollins, Judith M.; Hansman, Catherine A.
Adult Basic Education: An Interdisciplinary Journal for Adult Literacy Educational Planning, v15 n1 p3-20 Spr 2005
This study examines how the Education Office of the "Oficina Juridica Para la Mujer" [Women's Legal Office] , a community-based popular education organization in Cochabamba, Bolivia, works with women to address personal, legal, and policy issues through local leadership training and popular education methodology. We investigate the marginalization women have faced in the traditionally male sphere of social action, and the creative initiatives they have developed in an effort to reach out to other women and community members. Exploring the unique and powerful dimension that a woman's perspective lends to popular education provides insight concerning the real-world applications of current educational theory and demonstrates a powerful model for achieving individual, community, and societal change.
