Accelerated Reader: What Are the Lasting Effects on the Reading Habits of Middle School Students Exposed to Accelerated Reader in Elementary Grades?
Pavonetti, Linda M.; Brimmer, Kathyrn M.; Cipielewski, James F.
Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, v46 n4 p300-11 Dec-Jan 2002-2003
Investigates whether seventh-grade students who were exposed to the Accelerated Reader during elementary school tend to do more reading of books than those who did not have such exposure. Describes Accelerated Reader, a program in which books are given a point value on the basis of length and reading level. Proposes that students do not become lifelong readers from incentive programs.
