What's Hot in Adolescent Literacy 1997-2006
Cassidy, Jack; Garrett, Sherrye Dee; Barrera, Estanislado S., IV
Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, v50 n1 p30-36 Sep 2006
Ten years ago the first author and colleagues decided to publish a list of the topics in literacy that were (or had been) receiving attention in the reading field in general education publications such as the widely read journal "Educational Leadership," and in the popular media (Cassidy & Wenrich, 1997). Despite the popularity of the list, many in the field of reading have argued that this index of topics would be more valuable if there was more discussion of the individual subjects. Thus, in this anniversary year, the authors thought it might be interesting to explore some of the issues that are of particular interest to educators of adolescents. To accomplish this task the authors interviewed in depth three of the respondents on the 2006 list who have an interest in adolescent literacy. And they asked them to respond to six of the topics most relevant to educators of adolescents ("adolescent literacy", "comprehension", "high-stakes assessment", "word meaning/vocabulary", "critical literacy/reading", and "motivation").
