A survey was conducted of children's reading interests in Sierra Leone in 1971. In 1972-73, another survey was carried out to determine if the reading interests of children in other parts of the world coincided with those of the Sierra Leonean children. In English there seems to be a large group of so-called reflexive verbs that do not possess any definable reflexive meaning. Grammatical reflexives are distinguishable from semantic reflexives and display considerable variation from one another also. Eight patterns or groupings of verbs are considered. (Author/SW)

Changes in a first-year course in English at the University of Ghana, Legon, are traced. The approach used in 1972-73 for language and study skills is outlined. A study was conducted at Nanyang University in Singapore with Chinese-educated students who supposedly received 12 years of instruction in English but who were still deficient in the language.
