Converging Technology, Pedagogy, and Critical Thinking
Moeller, Aleidine J.; Van Alstine, Megan
Learning Languages, v17 n1 p8-14 Fall-Win 2011
The theme of children and technology has been a prevailing topic of conversation among parents, teachers and researchers, stirring debate in all sectors of society. What is gained and what is lost by these "digital natives" born into an age of globalization, social connections, instant communication and gratification? How can technology be harnessed to promote motivation and learning without losing the values of deep listening, relationships, being present in the moment and concern and awareness of others? This article introduces how digital media can be integrated into the elementary classroom to promote an engaging learning environment that can lead to higher motivation, higher thinking skills and creativity, all of which maximize the benefits of technology for learning a foreign language while leading to a greater appreciation of language study. This article provides exemplars of Web 2.0 resources and tasks that can be integrated into the elementary language classroom to create a learning environment that can involve elementary learners actively in the language learning process while promoting deeper thinking skills.
