Gender, Race, and Perceived Similarity Effects in Developmental Relationships: The Moderating Role of Relationship Duration.
Turban, Daniel B.; Dougherty, Thomas W.; Lee, Felissa K.
Journal of Vocational Behavior, v61 n2 p240-62 Oct 2002
A study of 220 faculty advisor-doctoral student dyads found that students were more likely to be in developmental relationships with advisors of similar race and gender; perceived similarity was related to the mentoring received. Those in gender-dissimilar dyads received less mentoring initially but more in the long term; no similar race effects were found. (Contains 67 references.) (SK)
