Visual data differs from visual information since it must be recorded, analyzed, and manipulated in some manner, whereas visual information is primarily sensory input. Our environment is constantly infused with visual inputs, and it is sometimes difficult to make sense of them or to determine how best to deal with them for instructional purposes and capitalize on their power as visual data. This article briefly examines how visual data can be used in a variety of disciplines including art, language arts/reading, mathematics, social studies, and science. The utility and use of visual data in science education is a particular focus of the paper, along with discussion about its relevance in today's educational environment.
