The authors assert that universities make four unique contributions to the education of teachers by providing (1) reflection on educational issues; (2) multiple perspectives; (3) intellectual diversity; and (4) research. These contributions are discussed. (MT)

By seeing teacher education as a practical philosophy committed to reflection, conversation, and action, the author argues, we can assist in moving the culture of the modern university away from its allegiances to elitism and technicism, toward a view of education as preparation for participation in democracy. Undergraduate students in education and engineering estimated the mean salaries of four groups of teachers. Prospective engineers were generally more accurate than prospective teachers, and males were more accurate than females. Salary was more important to prospective engineers, while other benefits were more important to prospective teachers.…
