Citizenship Education and Diversity: Implications for Teacher Education.
Banks, James A.
Journal of Teacher Education, v52 n1 p5-16 Jan-Feb 2001
Citizenship education should be reconceptualized because of the increased salience of diversity worldwide. Students must develop a delicate balance of cultural, national, and global identifications. To help students become effective citizens, teachers must acquire the same identifications. The author describes how he tries to help students in one teacher education course challenge and critically examine their cultural and national identifications. (SM)
