Describes research on teacher education designed to create a system for preparing and supporting effective literacy teachers for a single diverse community, conceptualizing teacher education as the process of developing and linking communities of practice following three modes of belonging (engagement, imagination, and alignment) and concluding that teacher education researchers must emphasize the goal of improving schooling in diverse communities.
