"My Eyes Have Been Opened": White Teachers and Racial Awareness.
Johnson, Lauri
Journal of Teacher Education, v53 n2 p153-67 Mar-Apr 2002
Used a life history approach to examine the narratives of white, female teachers in racially diverse classrooms who were considered "aware of race and racism." Data from interviews and observations indicated that teachers' perceptions of racial awareness were influenced by: perceived identity as outsiders which enabled them to disidentify with whites, living and working with diverse individuals in equal status relationships, and personal beliefs emphasizing equality and social justice.
