This paper summarizes a British study which examined the opportunities available for pupils with special educational needs and low attainment to gain examination qualifications at Key Stage 4 for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). Findings are discussed in terms of access to courses, changes in patterns of student placement, changes in syllabi, and access to examination tasks. (JDD)
